Negro Spiritual

Here is a spiritual that will please your choir and the audience alike! This festival arrangement stresses the rhythms and asks you to express the dynamics, to bring out the contrasts of this fun arrangement. Keen attention in the rehearsal work may be required, but it is well worth it. For worship, good high school and beyond. (Publisher description)

I had the great pleasure of conducting Dr. Garrett’s “Hold On” with the 2020 Massachusetts All State Choir. The singers joyfully enjoyed learning the challenging rhythms and it is certainly an audience pleaser. Programming this Negro spiritual also allowed for productive teachable moments on this specific genre of choral music. Bravo, Marques Garrett for your contributions!

Keep your hand on-a the plow.
Hold on, hold on!

Noah, Noah, let me come in,
The door’s all fastened and the window’s pinned.
Keep your hand on-a the plow.
Hold on, hold on!

Noah said, “You lost your track,
You can’t plow straight and keep-a looking back.”
Keep your hand…

Hold on, hold on!
Keep your hand…

If you want to get to heaven, let me tell you how;
Just keep your hand on the Gospel plow.
Keep your hand…

If that plow stay in your hand,
it will land you straight in the Promised land.
Keep your hand…
