During the dark period of slavery in American history, many enslaved Africans converted to Christianity. The jubilee spirituals are often an expression of hope and/or escape from the daily struggles. Life was difficult and sometimes deadly. The refrain and verse responses of “My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord” speak of the faith they had in their Christianity. Their hope rested in the fact that no matter what happened to their physical body, their soul was firmly secured in their Savior.

In the Lord, my soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

Before I’d stay in hell one day, my soul’s been anchored in the Lord.
I’d sing and pray myself away, my soul’s been anchored in the Lord.

Gonna shout and pray and never stop…
Until I reach that mountaintop…
